Video Interview with Sean Faden (‘Moon Knight’ Visual Effects Supervisor)
“They really respect and collaborate and include the visual effects team in the creative process,” reveals the Oscar-nominated visual effects supervisor Sean Faden (“Mulan”) on the perks of working on a high-profile Marvel Studios project. For our recent online chat, he adds that “it really felt like we were on the trip all the time and we gave our ideas, and sometimes they were bad and sometimes they were good, but there was always a back and forth. comes and we would kind of all achieve the final look of things together. Watch our exclusive video interview above.
“Moon Knight” was created by Jeremy Slater, based on the Marvel comics featuring the character of the same name. Slater’s vision as head writer was later directed during production by the Egyptian director Mohammad Diab (who directed four of the six episodes) with collaborators Aaron Moorhead and Justin Benson directing the second and fourth episodes of the Disney+ limited series, the sixth television production in Phase Four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, following “WandaVision,” “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier,” “Loki,” “ And if…?” and “Hawkeye”.

Oscar Isaac stars like Marc Spector (aka Moon Knight) and Steven Grant (aka Mr. Knight), two Quirks of a man with dissociative identity disorder (who we eventually learn is joined by a third Quirk, the mysterious Jake Lockley). Marc is a ruthless mercenary who becomes Moon Knight, the avatar (i.e. the manifestation of a deity in bodily form on earth) of the Egyptian moon god Khonshu, along with his Quirk Steven, a shop clerk of mild-mannered British gift who becomes Mr. Knight, Steven’s character when he is Khonshu’s avatar. The co-stars of the series Mai Calamawy as Spector’s ex-wife, Layla El-Faouly (later to become Scarlet Scarab), Oscar nominee Ethan Hawke as the villainous Harrow and Academy Award winner F. Murray Abraham, the voice of Khonshu. “Moon Knight” premiered on March 30 to critical acclaim and strong word-of-mouth, with critics reserving particular praise for Isaac and the series’ impressive production values and darker tone.
As expected in a big-budget action-adventure series like “Moon Knight,” visual effects play a major role in how the series looks and, therefore, whether the series manages to land, especially when expectations are so high. While Faden agrees he had his work cut out for him on this project, he humbly defers to his colleagues and the show’s star when explaining why the show ended up being such a triumph. “The number of different artists that came together for this project was the highlight. We really had one of the best production designers I’ve ever worked with, Stefania Cellaand truly one of the greatest costume designers with Megan Kasperlik and an awesome cinematography team with between Gregory Middleton and Andrew Droz Palermo. We had a good group of craftsmen coming together for this one,” he says, reserving his most fervent praise for Isaac, who regularly wowed the cast and crew on set with his uncanny ability to make a subtle transition between his different Quirks. “To see Oscar Isaac create this character from the beginning,” he says, “to see that evolution and see how much he kept in his head and figure it out; to see it all really end where it made sense, we were all doing this as we could to support the whole story and support everything, but really, just seeing his performance tie it all together was a highlight for me.
