Best Visual Artist 2021 | Adriana M. Garcia | People
Winner: Adriana M. Garcia
There is an expansive and expressive quality to the work of San Antonio artist Adriana M. Garcia that is exemplified by De Todos Caminos Somos Todos Uno – a 117-foot mural she created for the San Pedro Creek Cultural Park in conjunction with the San Antonio Tercentennial Celebration. Comprised of detailed vignettes exploring San Antonio’s rich past, the impressive installation also showcases Garcia’s respect for history and his ancestors. A West Side native, graduate of Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, and studied fine art in Valencia, Spain, Garcia has created murals in San Antonio and San Francisco, co-wrote the play La Carpa Garcia on her family’s traveling tent show of the 1930s and illustrated the award-winning children’s book by Xelena González Everything around us. Known for her colorful portraits of strong women and her works exploring themes of immigration and mental health, Garcia strongly believes in the social impact that art can have and views her creative practice as “the most accessible medium to protest, to love, to heal and to learn”.
