The Department of Visual Studies (VS) offers a multidisciplinary education, centered on the history of art and cinematographic art. VS admits approximately 30 undergraduate, MPhil, and PhD students each academic year. The BA (Hons) in Visual Studies program emphasizes the history and theory of visual arts and culture in Asia and beyond; in addition, the program offers hands-on, object-based and skill-based learning through studio practice, video production, curation, and internships. The department offered two taught master’s programs: MA in Curatorial and Art History (MACAH) and MA in Creative and Media Industries (MACMI). In addition, a new Bachelor’s program in Creative Media Industries (BACMI) will be launched in 2022/23.

To facilitate the development of our program and other new initiatives, VS invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Associate/Assistant Professor to contribute to teaching and research in the fields of conservation and art history.

The appointee is expected to:

  1. teach relevant courses at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, including supervision of final student projects;
  2. develop innovative and rigorous research and generate high-impact research results; and
  3. contribute to the service and development of the Department.

General requirements

Candidates for the position must have:

  1. A doctorate in art history, visual arts or a relevant discipline;
  2. Good research record, including publications, grants and awards;
  3. Relevant teaching and curatorial experience; and
  4. Good ability to manage academic administration and strong commitment to knowledge transfer, community engagement and related activities.

Candidates who can teach a wide range of subjects, including Western art, provenance research, curatorial practice, and creative media industries, are of particular interest. Applicants are required to provide information on their research records and evidence of high quality teaching in relevant subjects.


The terms of engagement will be competitive. Rank and pay will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Benefits include annual leave, medical and dental benefits, mandatory provident fund, gratuities, and travel and baggage fees for the eligible appointee. The appointee has the right to apply for internal and external grants to support their teaching, research and conference activities.

Appointment will normally be on the basis of an initial three-year contract, which, subject to review and mutual agreement, may lead to a longer-term appointment with the possibility of consideration for justification.
